Implementing a Disaster Recovery Plan - One of the best investments your business could make
An effective Data Backup Strategy and Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) will help save your business when disaster strikes. Hardware failure, theft, fire or lightning strike could occur at any time, and the speed at which your business can recover and be ready to serve customers depends on the effectiveness of your backup strategy and DRP.
The DRP goes way beyond just backing up data. Every facet of rebuilding a business quickly after a major disaster is considered and a structured plan must be designed in consultation with the business owners.
The following points are just a sample of what must be considered when implementing an effective DRP.
- Audit of existing hardware and software
- Implementing a regular data backup plan
- Choosing the most effective backup media/hardware (CD, DVD, Tape drive, Portable Hard Drive)
- Is there a requirement for offsite backup storage?
- Determining the long-term data backup requirements, statutory requirements
- Collation of Application CD's and Licensing information
- Offsite storage and/or backup of Application CD's and Licensing information
- Planning for swift access to replacement premises, hardware and equipment, communications
- Documenting various account/password details for communications providers (i.e. Internet Access, Email accounts etc)
- Building redundancy into your existing systems (i.e. Hard drive mirroring, dialup access to internet etc)
- Documenting the Disaster Recovery Plan
Don't put it off any longer!
